Elena Pinderhughes is a 19-year-old flutist and vocalist. She began playing the flute and singing when she was 7. At 11, she was featured in an HBO special on young musicians entitled The Music in Me. She is a recipient of the YoungArts Gold Award, a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award and she was a member of the Grammy Band and Choir, the San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Young Musicians Program.

Elena has performed at Carnegie Hall, the White House, the Kennedy Center, the SF Jazz Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and she has performed with Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Arturo Sandoval and Josh Groban, to name only a few.

Recently, Elena recorded on Ambrose Akinmusire's album The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint for Blue Note Records, on Wayne Wallace's Grammy-nominated album LATIN JAZZ ยท JAZZ LATIN and performed in the premier of Vijay Iyer's work OPEN CITY.

She studies with Linda Chesis and Gretchen Parlato and attends the Manhattan School of Music as a recipient of the Joseph F. McCrindle Scholarship.

Stay Thirsty is very pleased to name Elena Pinderhughes our Spotlight Artist for Fall 2014. She is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
